A special Chaplaincy Day of Discernment was held at St. Matthew’s in San Mateo on July 11 for those considering a call to lay and ordained chaplaincy. Participants learned about how chaplains share the love of Christ beyond church walls, a key component of our Strategic Vision.
The Rev. Nicholas Young and Canon Maurice Dyer II gave a presentation about opportunities in federal ministries across The Episcopal Church, including military chaplaincy, chaplaincy in VA hospitals, and law enforcement.
Members of two panels answered questions about their call to ministry and their formation paths. Panelists discussed their work in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE), emergency departments, university campus ministry, in prisons and jails, and other settings.
The panelists were the Rev. Maggie Foote, a palliative care chaplain; the Rev. Eric Nefstead, ACPE-certified educator; the Rev. Nicholas Young, Missioner for Armed Forces and Federal Ministries; the Rev. Maurice Dyer II, Canon to the Bishop Suffragan for Armed Forces and Federal Ministries of the Episcopal Church; the Rev. Jay Watan, a former Army chaplain; Dr. Travis Stevens, campus ministry/university chaplain; Kate Canova, Elmwood Jail chaplain; and the Rev. Cal Payne Taylor, UCSF chaplain resident.
The day finished with a presentation on discernment and formation for those interested in ordination.
