Dear friends in Christ,
I’m writing to update you on the resolution of a Title IV matter that was opened in 2020.
In the vast majority of our dealings with one another, disputes and disagreements can be worked out between people directly. This is as it should be, as learning to better love one another involves acknowledging when we hurt other people and seeking forgiveness, as well as responding to being hurt by others with truth and grace, with justice and mercy. Each of us is called to journey, with God’s help, into Christ’s way of reconciliation, and we experience redemption and resurrection most frequently in the repair work that is part of tending the soil of our human relationships.
As a church, we also value how precious and tenuous our common life can be, especially when we gather in larger groups. We have a duty to be faithful stewards of the gifts and gospel that have been passed on to us. Sometimes the breakdown in our relationships is too profound and damaging for personal acknowledgment and a pledge of amendment of life to address alone.
For matters of this import, we have the process called Title IV (from the section in our Canons) that allows the church to institutionally address such situations and safeguard the integrity, expectations, and privileges associated with ordained service in the church. All people are beloved by God, and God’s mercy and forgiveness are inexhaustible. Title IV allows the church to institutionally process grievous breakdowns while simultaneously acknowledging that we all fall short of the glory of God and, still, are reconciled and share in the hope of resurrection because of the grace of God in Jesus Christ.

Queridas/os/es amigas, amigos, y amigues en Cristo,
Les escribo para informarles sobre la resolución de un asunto del Título IV que se abrió en 2020.
En la gran mayoría de nuestras relaciones, las disputas y los desacuerdos pueden resolverse directamente entre las personas. Así es como debe ser, ya que aprender a amarnos mejor implica reconocer cuando lastimamos a otros y buscar el perdón, así como responder al dolor ajeno con verdad y gracia, con justicia y misericordia. Cada uno de nosotros está llamado a recorrer, con la ayuda de Dios, el camino de reconciliación de Cristo, y experimentamos la redención y la resurrección con mayor frecuencia en la labor de reparación que forma parte de cultivar la tierra de nuestras relaciones humanas.
Como iglesia, también valoramos lo preciosa y frágil que puede ser nuestra vida en común, especialmente cuando nos reunimos en grupos más grandes. Tenemos el deber de ser fieles administradores de los dones y del evangelio que se nos han transmitido. A veces, la ruptura en nuestras relaciones es demasiado profunda y dañina como para que el reconocimiento personal y el compromiso de cambiar de vida se aborden en solitario.
Para asuntos de tanta importancia, contamos con el proceso denominado Título IV (de la sección de nuestros Cánones), que permite a la iglesia abordar institucionalmente estas situaciones y salvaguardar la integridad, las expectativas y los privilegios asociados con el servicio ordenado en la iglesia. Dios ama a todos, y su misericordia y perdón son inagotables. El Título IV permite a la iglesia procesar institucionalmente las graves rupturas, reconociendo al mismo tiempo que todos estamos destituidos de la gloria de Dios y, aun así, estamos reconciliados y compartimos la esperanza de la resurrección gracias a la misericordia de Dios en Jesucristo.
