About the Episcopal Church in the Bay Area
The Episcopal Church in the Bay Area, formally known as the Diocese of California, is a diverse community of faith with congregations spread throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area. Approximately 18,000 baptized people form our 72 congregations. We are comprised of six deaneries (a geographical group of congregations): the Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, and Southern Alameda deaneries cover their respective counties; the Peninsula deanery consists of all of San Mateo County and a small portion of Santa Clara County.
Bishop Marc Handley Andrus
The Rt. Rev. Dr. Marc Handley Andrus is the Eighth Bishop of the Diocese of California. Elected in 2006, he serves as our chief pastor and is charged with the apostolic work of leading, supervising, and uniting the churches of our diocese. Prior to his installation as Bishop of California, Andrus served as Bishop Suffragan in the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama. He plans to retire in July of 2024 and will be succeeded by Bishop-elect Austin Keith Rios.
Bishop Coadjutor Austin Keith Rios
On May 4, 2024, the Rt. Rev. Austin Keith Rios was ordained and consecrated as the Bishop Coadjutor of the Diocese of California. He will hold this title until July 2024, when Bishop Marc retires. At that point, the Bishop Coadjutor will assume the role of Bishop Diocesan, becoming our diocese’s sole bishop. He will be installed at Grace Cathedral on August 11, 2024. Rios was elected Ninth Bishop of California in December 2023. He previously served as the rector of St. Paul’s Within the Walls Episcopal Church in Rome.
