Stanford Canterbury Foundation

College Chaplaincy Supported by the Diocese of California

Stanford Canterbury, together with the Diocese of California, funds an Episcopal chaplain to support students, faculty, and staff at Stanford University. Stanford Canterbury is one of the diocese’s 11 institutions. Our current chaplain, Dr. Travis Stevens, partners with the pastor of University Lutheran Church to support a student group called Progressive Christians at Stanford: Episcopal Lutheran Campus Ministry, which is the only LGBTQ-inclusive Christian campus ministry at Stanford.

Thanks to the support of two dedicated Episcopal lay members, the Episcopal Impact Fund team, and three Episcopal churches who volunteered or lent coffee equipment, we served over 80 guests each week!

The student group meets on campus on Wednesdays for Bread and Belonging, where we provide a home-cooked meal for students and engage in a variety of programs, from exploring the writings of Christian mystics to preparing meals for the local women’s shelter to lectio divina Bible study. Our aim is to provide a spiritual home for students that invites them to ask the big questions of themselves and the Christian tradition: who is God, what does it mean to follow Jesus, and how can we engage the riches of liturgical Christianity to serve others?
