Sojourn Chaplaincy
Healing Hearts Through Innovative Spiritual Care
Since 1982, Sojourn Chaplaincy has offered crucial multi-faith spiritual and emotional support at SF General Hospital, the city’s only Level 1 trauma and safety-net hospital. Our mission began through an interfaith partnership with DioCal, providing compassionate care to people with HIV/AIDS.
Over the past four decades, we have expanded our services to provide comprehensive and innovative spiritual care and counseling for thousands of patients and staff annually, including those facing significant barriers to healthcare. Sojourn is also known nationally for innovation in advancing chaplaincy. Sojourn has led the field in educating chaplains on providing gender-affirming spiritual care, reproductive healthcare, evidence-based staff support interventions, etc. Through programs like Code Lavender, Sojourn provides debriefings and mental health resources, helping staff after critical incidents or offering one-on-one counseling—whether personal or professional.
The majority of the patients we serve are socially and economically marginalized, unhoused, refugees and immigrants, the aging, people who suffer from severe mental illness or substance abuse, people with HIV, and victims of trauma or violence. Nearly three-quarters of all “charity care” in San Francisco is provided by SFGH. Hospital interpreters offer service in over 20 languages.
With your continued partnership, we hope to expand our services into new areas, such as the hospital’s Street Medicine and Addiction Care Teams. Your support helps us provide compassionate care to those who need it most. Thank you for making our work possible.
