Braid Mission

Making a lasting impact in the lives of youth in foster care

The Diocese’s newest institution, Braid Mission makes a lasting impact in the lives of youth in foster care through a mentoring program that helps build trusted and supportive relationships. Braid volunteers work in teams to create a positive, stable environment where healing can take place. Every week Braid teams live out core values of hope, presence, recreation, and communion. This unique team model helps provide consistency for youth and flexibility and friendship for volunteers.

Episcopal priests Rebecca Edwards and Christopher Chase were convicted by their faith to found Braid in 2014. Today the Braid community has more than 100 active volunteers, and in the last decade Braid has served more than 80 youth, trained several hundred volunteers, and educated hundreds in the Bay Area and beyond about the challenges of foster care. Braid volunteers represent a wide variety of backgrounds, ages, and interests and serve a population of primarily BIPOC children and families.
