SUMMARY:Book Panel with Nico Lang\, author of American Teenager: How Trans Kids Are Surviving Hate and Finding Joy in a Turbulent Era
DESCRIPTION:We at St. Aidan’s in San Francisco are delighted and honored to host a conversation and book signing with Nico Lang\, author of American Teenager: How Trans Kids Are Surviving Hate and Finding Joy in a Turbulent Era. Faith communities are not known in this country for active\, visible support for trans and nonbinary young people and their families. But trans and nonbinary youth are part of congregations across our diocese and in various communities of faith\, including ours. Come join us\, celebrate them\, and support Nico Lang who has written a powerful new book centering their voices and stories. \nMedia coverage tends to sensationalize the fight over how trans kids should be allowed to live\, but what is incredibly rare are the voices of the people at the heart of this debate: transgender and gender nonconforming kids themselves. For their groundbreaking new book\, journalist Nico Lang spent a year traveling the country to document the lives of transgender\, nonbinary\, and genderfluid teens and their families. Drawing on hundreds of hours of on-the-ground interviews with them and the people in their communities\, American Teenager: How Trans Kids Are Surviving Hate and Finding Joy in a Turbulent Era paints a vivid portrait of what it’s actually like to grow up trans today. \nFrom the tip of Florida’s conservative panhandle to vibrant queer communities in California\, and from Texas churches to mosques in Illinois\, American Teenager gives readers a window into the lives of Wyatt\, Rhydian\, Mykah\, Clint\, Ruby\, Augie\, Jack\, and Kylie\, eight teens who\, despite what some lawmakers might want us to believe\, are truly just kids looking for a brighter future. \nThis event is free to attend\, but rsvp appreciated for lunch planning purposes. \nDownload pamphlet to share | View event on Facebook \n

SUMMARY:Finding Our Way with Giving and Receiving Care: A Conversation with Susan Halpern at St. Aidan’s\, San Francisco
DESCRIPTION:Susan Halpern\, Social Worker and Psychotherapist and author of The Etiquette of Illness: What to Say When You Can’t Find the Words\, is offering a discussion/workshop at St. Aidan’s. \nLife happens! All of us\, irrespective of age\, whether due to an accident\, injury\, or acute or chronic illness have found that there will be a time when we need help from others. We may also be in a position to offer help. Often\, especially in the dying and grieving process or having received devastating health news\, we don’t know what to say and feel helpless. \nJoin us as Susan Halpern presents thoughtful responses to the common experiences her clients\, people like you\, have had and learn: \n\nHow to support someone without being intrusive\, honoring boundaries;\nWhat to say or not to say to someone who is grieving or dealing with a life threatening illness;\nHow to offer help in an effective manner\, and\nHow to navigate the struggle of changes in roles\, moving from independence to dependence on others for some of life’s basic needs.\nMost importantly\, by sharing our experiences\, we can be open to kindness\, love\, acceptance\, and compassion for ourselves and others.\n\n  \nRSVP appreciated for lunch planning purposes
