Celebrating Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe in the Mission and in Oakland

Posted on December 11, 2012

This past Sunday the congregations of El Buen Samaritano in San Franciso’s Mission District and Iglesia Santiago / St. James’ in Oakland celebrated the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe). The Feast commemorates the vision of the Virgin Mary by Juan Diego in Mexico in 1531; she is a patron saint of Mexico and venerated in many parts of the world.

The Mission District celebration at El Buen Samaritano took place at the church of St. John the Evangelist on 15th Street. The Rev. Gloria Del Castillo, the vicar of the congregation, presided over a very lively Eucharist that featured the mariachi band Nueava Luz de San Marcos, the Aztec dancers, Consigna de Anahuac, during the offertory, and the performance of Ave Maria by a young girl christened La Princessa de San Francisco. Artists of the community presented a portrait of Bishop Marc Andrus. Following the Eucharist, Del Castillo blessed members of the congregation, and members of El Buen Samaritano served a wonderful luncheon. View photos here.

In Oakland, Iglesia Santiago / St. James celebrated the feast with the congregation La Santisima Trinidad, Richmond. The Rev. Sam Dessórdi Leite, the Rev. Javier Torres, and the Ven. Carolyn Bolton led the congregation in procession on the street into the church. Inside, the bilingual sermon was delivered by Leite and Torres, and the bilingual Eucharist celebrated by Leite and the Rev. Sanna Reinholtzen, a pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Images of Our Lady of Guadalupe were blessed and the Santiago / St James’ food pantry team members were commissioned. This warm, family celebration ended with a delicious potluck feast by members of the congregation. View photos here.

These two celebrations, as well as others around the Diocese of California, are example of the breadth of witness and the celebration of our faith in our communities.
