2019 Advent Resources

With Advent season just around the corner, now is a great time to begin reflecting on what kind of Advent spiritual practice you'd like to do beginning Sunday, December 1. Here are some free, fun, and meaningful Advent resources you can use in your practice:

  • Lovely, downloadable Advent Calendar with the theme of “Peace” from the Rev. Thomas Mousin and the Rev. Merry Watters. This one page calendar has a word for each day and a short scripture passage.
  • Also on the theme of “Peace” – Living Compass offers wonderful Advent mediations for every day of the season and following the Sunday Lectionary.  Booklets are available in English and Spanish for $1 each or can be downloaded for free. There is also a downloadable leader guide to use the booklets in a weekly group or to have an Advent retreat.
  • Candle Press has a lovely resource for families with young children for Advent. This downloadable resource contains a page for each week of Advent to use with an Advent wreath and short bible readings. This is a great way to introduce family faith time with something to read, something to pray, something to do, and something to discuss.
  • If you haven’t looked at the Way of Love resources from the Presiding Bishop’s office, this would be a good time to start. There is a complete Advent program here.
  • The site Praying in Color offers some downloadable black and white Advent calendars to use in daily prayer. Instructions let you customize how you want to use the calendar. The basic idea behind “praying in color” is to write a word or two in the space and then doodle around the words or in the space as you pray. This practice helps in concentration and is accessible for all ages.
  • Another interesting calendar is the Celtic 40 Days of Advent Calendar plus the 12 Days of Christmas. This calendar is described as “Ideas for Living Joyfully” and I believe the suggested practices, activities, and prayers can do that. It begins November 15, but enjoy it whenever you start!
  • Form more resources, Building Faith is a fabulous website of Episcopal resources for Faith Formation at all ages. Click here for Advent resources as well as resources for any liturgical season.
