Buon Natale! 4th Annual Christmas Concert at St. Paul’s, Burlingame

Sunday, December 15, 2019, 4:00 pm

Celebrate Christmas in a journey in music to Italy with the Choirs of St. Paul’s Burlingame and Dr. Susan Jane Matthews, Director, accompanied by chamber orchestra and organ. The Choirs of St. Paul’s performing in the concert include 45 singers, young trebles in grade 2 through adults. The journey begins in 16th-century Rome at St. Peter’s Basilica with an a cappella 5-voice motet of Palestrina, Rorate coeli, and then continues to a 17th-century Milanese convent for the mesmerizing 8-voice Magnificat primo of Chiara Cozzolani. You will pause to hear a traditional Neapolitan Bagpiper carol, and piano variations on a Roman folk dance, Il Saltarello Romano, a souvenir of Fanny Hensel’s 1839 trip to Italy. The trip concludes in 18th-century Venice for the timeless Gloria of Antonio Vivaldi, composed for the girls’ choir and orchestra at the orphanage of Ospedale della Pietà. A festive Italian reception follows hosted by the St. Paul’s Vestry.
