About the Episcopal Church in the Bay Area
The Episcopal Church in the Bay Area, formally known as the Diocese of California, is a diverse community of faith with congregations spread throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area. Approximately 21,000 people form our 73 congregations. We are comprised of six deaneries (a geographical group of congregations): the Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, and Southern Alameda deaneries cover their respective counties; the Peninsula deanery consists of all of San Mateo County and a small portion of Santa Clara County.

Bishop Marc
The Rt. Rev. Dr. Marc Handley Andrus is our eighth bishop. Elected in 2006, he serves as the Episcopal Church in the Bay Area’s chief pastor and is charged with the apostolic work of leading, supervising, and uniting the churches of our diocese. Prior to his installation as Bishop of California, Andrus served as Bishop Suffragan in the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama.
